...#7 Leonard

Some rams are born with an obvious personality. Some are jokers, some are nasty, some are gentle, some are very friendly, and some live their lives with an unreasonable fear of MAN. Some are absolutely dull.

Most rams are curious, generally quite confident, and, often quite friendly. However, no matter how friendly, or gentle, NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON A RAM.

Leonard is a Corriedale ram who's absolute lack of personality is absolutely enchanting. When you look in his eyes, it is like looking into an empty room. He is the sweetest, most lovable creature, but lord help him, "there ain't no lights on, and definitely, there ain't no one home"!

If we catch up Leonard and his group of the ewes (this is during breeding season), to change a ripped coat on one of the ewes, Leonard doesn't throw a fit when you touch "one of his girls" like some rams do, instead he pretends that you are not there. It is almost as if he looks straight through you! He may even take advantage of the fact that you have restrained one of the girls, and go ahead and try to take advantage of the situation by taking advantage of the ..... well, you know what I mean, after all this is breeding season!

Working with Leonard is like working with a 300 pound lamb. When we walk into the pasture to round up his little flock and bring them in, he meekly moves with the group, like a giant marshmallow. He is now just shy of 2 years old, and he is getting huge. He stands several inches taller than the mature ewes, and he is still growing. But for all his mass, he seems to project a kind of peacefulness. I have begun to wonder if perhaps he has connected with the soul of Gandhi, and has found "inner peace".

Or more likely, he is just plain and simple, .....simple!

If Jean or I are going to get hurt badly by a ram, it will probably be by Leonard. It is so easy to take a simple, seemingly gentle, ram for granted, and in one fatal moment, forget Rule # 1, "NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON A RAM" and that includes Leonard.

Huge Leonard (on the right) and his little flock!
