Majacraft Spinning wheel Ratios

Definition: Ratio, how many times the flyer will turn (and twist the yarn) with each single rotation of the flywheel.

The following are the (approximate) major ratios available on the Majacraft wheels. This chart was developed from individual wheels from our inventory, and this chart should be used only as a guide since there are variations from wheel to wheel.

Please bear in mind the fact that if Majacraft makes a major change in the diameter of either the whorl or the flywheel, this chart will not reflect the ratios of those new spinning wheels.

Don't get to "hung up" on "exact" ratios, since a relatively small change in the diameter of the smallest groove of the whorl will make a dramatic difference in the ratio for that groove for that specific whorl. Note the comparison at the bottom of the following chart, between 2 Rose spinning wheels.

Each of the following numbers are to be read as "   " to 1 and have been obtained by turning the flyer by hand and counting the number of rotations  required to make one complete revolution of the flywheel, i.e. real world numbers. Belt slippage during actual spinning has not be factored in.

Each test has been made with the belt in corresponding grooves (example: second groove in both whorl and flywheel).  Minor changes in speed can be obtained for the middle whorl grooves by moving the belt one groove up or down on the flywheel, however these changes rarely amount to more than a 0.2 change in ratio (i.e. 8.4 may become 8.6 or 8.2). This minor change is 0.1 for the Rose spinning wheel. Moving the belt one groove on the flywheel (without changing to a different whorl groove) will add or subtract 0.1 to the ratio (i.e. 12.8 to 1 becomes 12.9 to 1).

Compare these numbers from a second test Rose and you will notice the variations from wheel to wheel Rose Slow 4.4 6.2 8.4 11.6 16.0 Rose Fast 5.9 8.8 12.9 15.8 18.8

Mixing whorls from different Majacraft models can give you a different set of ratios.  These may require a different belt length, and in the case of very high speeds,  may cause the belt to slip if your bobbin brake is set too high, or if you "draft against the wheel".
